What does physiotherapy cost, and who pays?
The honest answer: it depends on your condition and on how you are insured. Below we explain how it works, what our rates are and which insurers we have contracts with.
Basic insurance, supplementary insurance and the chronic list
For adults, the Dutch basic insurance (basisverzekering) covers physiotherapy only in limited cases. Most treatment is paid from your supplementary insurance (aanvullende verzekering), if you have one. The number of sessions per calendar year depends on your policy.
If your condition is on the statutory list of chronic conditions (the chronische lijst), for example Parkinson's, MS or after a stroke, basic insurance pays from the 21st session onwards. You pay the first 20 sessions yourself, or your supplementary insurance covers them. For this you need a referral from your GP or specialist.
Anything paid by basic insurance counts towards your compulsory deductible (eigen risico), which is €385 in 2026. Payments from supplementary insurance do not.
A few conditions have their own rules in basic insurance, such as hip or knee osteoarthritis, COPD and peripheral arterial disease. We'll work out together what applies to you at your first appointment.

You pay these rates when your treatment isn't (or is no longer) covered. Where we have a contract, we bill your insurer directly.

Questions about costs and cover
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you can come to us directly. For cover through the chronic conditions list you do need a referral from your GP or specialist.
Does physiotherapy count towards my deductible?
Only when basic insurance pays, for example from the 21st session for a chronic condition. What your supplementary insurance covers does not count towards your deductible.
Is a group programme covered?
Most supplementary policies count a group session as one treatment. For COPD and hip or knee osteoarthritis, basic insurance may cover part of it.
What happens when my covered sessions run out?
We keep track of your remaining sessions and warn you in good time. Then we discuss together whether to continue, or whether you can carry on independently or in a group.
What if I need to cancel?
Please cancel at least 24 hours in advance, by phone or voicemail. After that we charge the rate for the missed session, as insurers don't cover it.
